The purpose of this article is to systematize, through an essay, the theoretical foundations on the field of Communication for Development and Social Change. In order to meet this goal, the research methods used were bibliography review and document analysis, using this category as the unit of analysis. The results of the research allow us to define Communication for Development and Social Change as an academic, investigative, and professional action field that places citizen and community participation as the central axis for decision-making in political, economic, socio-cultural, and technological processes in society, where it is assumed that information and communication are a human right and a public good.
