Abstract

RAMIREZ CESPEDES, Zulia. The study of academic visibility through the rankings of universities. ARCIC [online]. 2018, vol.7, n.18, pp. 93-111.  Epub June 27, 2019. ISSN 2411-9970.

Academic rankings, despite being controversial instruments, have gained great popularity among users, budget providers and policy makers of the ES because they concentrate comparative information from universities, which is very useful in decision-making. The work makes a literature review about visibility studies that use rankings as a fundamental tool. Some institutional strategic plans are also analyzed. It is noted that universities interested in their visibility conceive objectives and actions to maintain or improve positions in the rankings. They include them in their strategic plans linked, especially, to the research dimension. They can be used as a tool to carry out comparative studies or as strategic instruments to conceive specific actions and as indicators for the review and control of progress and compliance with the strategy.

Keywords : universities rankings; academic visibility; strategic planning.
