Abstract

ROMERO FONSECA, Milenis; HERNANDEZ GARRIDO, Margarita Victoria; GARCIA LESCAILLE, Tania  and  MEERS, Philippe. Knowing, making visible and communicating the documentary heritage of the Universidad de Oriente, an institutional challenge. ARCIC [online]. 2022, vol.11, n.29, pp. 50-66.  Epub Aug 01, 2022. ISSN 2411-9970.

Introduction:

Documentary heritage constitutes an important part of the collective memory of peoples and reflects their diversity and culture. Historically, universities have become standard-bearers on the topic, not only because they are depositories of a significant accumulation of these goods, but also because of the different investigations that are developed in this scenario. In this sense, it is necessary to weigh their knowledge from the communication approach.

Objective:

To argue the importance of communication actions to know, make visible and disseminate documentary heritage at Universidad de Oriente, taking into account its structure and function, is the objective of this work.

Methods:

Scientific research methods such as analysis-synthesis and documentary analysis were used to obtain and analyze the necessary information regarding university documentary heritage and basic notions about communication. The study was contrasted with empirical observation in fieldwork, particularly in the archive and museums of the Universidad de Oriente, as well as with the in-depth interview carried out with the entire number of units that make up the population, that is, 10 specialists (7 of them, workers of these structures) and 3 directors of the departments of Heritage, Archive and university museums.

Results:

The results point to a brief analysis of the emergence and evolution of the university heritage and the new theories in this field, to the argumentation of the state, structure and function of the main collections that the Universidad de Oriente protects in documentary matters and to the approach of communication actions for the necessary process of management of the documentary collections within the institution.

Conclusions:

The conclusions reveal that the theoretical-practical tools provided by communication in close relation to heritage issues, represent the most effective ways to communicate and make visible the cultural heritage in the Universidad de Oriente, in the specific case of its documentary dimension.
