Abstract

BLANCO LOBAINA, Daylenis; BRULL GONZALEZ, Maribel  and  FERRAN FERNANDEZ, Yamilé. Cultural and urban resignification of Santiago de Cuba's Cinemas. ARCIC [online]. 2022, vol.11, n.30, pp. 1-19.  Epub Dec 01, 2022. ISSN 2411-9970.

After the disappearance of most of the cinemas that proliferated in Santiago de Cuba between 1906 and 1986, the city currently exhibits initiatives of reuse/resignification of several of the historic public spaces for film projection, which are essentially based on the maintenance of their cultural functionality.

This article reflects on the significance of historical film exhibition spaces in the socio-cultural context of the city of Santiago de Cuba at the beginning of the 21st century, based on an analysis of the cultural practices of (re)use, both public and private, that take place in these spaces. Data were collected through documentary analysis, in-depth interviews and participant observation. A quantitative-qualitative analysis was carried out, which took into account theoretical and empirical references about the role of cinema in city dynamics, and offered as results several considerations about the current status of cinema in this eastern Cuban city.

Keywords : cinema; historical spaces of film exhibition; city; meanings; Santiago de Cuba.
