Abstract

CAVEDA DE LA GUARDIA, Ernesto. University proposal for the updating of iconographic and epigraphic information on the Funerary Relief of Palmyra of the “Conde de Lagunillas” collection. ARCIC [online]. 2023, vol.12, n.31, pp. 237-256.  Epub Apr 01, 2023. ISSN 2411-9970.

The Funerary Relief of Palmyra (N.I. 94.508) exhibited in the "Museo Nacional de Bellas Artes de Cuba" is the only patrimonial piece of its type preserved in Hispanic America. This paper offers a proposal to update the iconographic and epigraphic information on the relief, from the studies on Historical-Cultural Heritage at the University of Havana and the framework of the international concern for the preservation of the heritage of ancient Syria, to facilitate the accessibility of the general public to the process of interpretation and reconstruction of the socio-historical identity of Palmyra. As part of the research, the main iconographic elements of the Relief, which express social representations related to processes of negotiation and cultural resistance, as well as gender relations, are identified and explained. With respect to the epigraphic and paleographic aspect, an analysis of the Aramaic inscription of the Relief is offered and a direct, autochthonous and contextualized Spanish translation is presented, which allows updating the indirect translation currently available. Finally, a sociolinguistic analysis and a set of recommendations are added, aimed at facilitating the processes of social interpretation of the heritage.
