Introduction:
abortion is a worldwide problem of great proportions, with greater risks in adolescents. There are several methods to perform the interruption of pregnancy, but despite being an institutionalized procedure there exist still complications.
Objective:
to describe clinical-epidemiological characteristics in relation to the results of the methods used for the early and voluntary interruption of pregnancy in adolescents in the Gynecology Service of the Mariana Grajales Hospital.
Method:
a descriptive, cross-sectional investigation was carried out between January 1, 2013 and December 31, 2014. The study population consisted of all adolescent patients who underwent induced abortion. In total there were 858 adolescents, 260 were applied misoprostol and 598 had curettage of the uterine cavity.
Results:
the adolescents who attended for the voluntary interruption of pregnancy are in the middle and late adolescence, adolescents treated with misoprostol had a lower average age. This interruption was made around the seventh week of pregnancy and an early onset of sexual intercourse was observed.
Conclusions:
misoprostol showed a greater number of complications, especially remains and failure of the method, and in most of the patients it was necessary to administer up to three doses of the medication.
