Abstract

PEREZ VAZQUEZ, Niurka et al. Keratoconus patients seen in refractive Surgery Consultation. Acta méd centro [online]. 2020, vol.14, n.4, pp. 423-431.  Epub Dec 31, 2020. ISSN 2709-7927.

Introduction:

keratoconus is a progressive and idiopathic disease, which develops in adolescence and young adults, thus constituting one of the most common forms of corneal dystrophies.

Objective:

to characterize the clinical-epidemiological behavior of patients with keratoconus.

Methods:

descriptive transversal study in patients with a diagnosis of keratoconus who attended a refractive surgery consultation at Villa Clara Ophthalmological Center during 2018.

Results:

age between 19 and 29 years old (34.88%), male sex (58.14%), eye and systemic diseases were predominant, allergic conjunctivitis (25.54%) and asthma (18.57%), 100% reported blurred vision as the main symptom, and the associated refractive defect was compound myopic astigmatism (67.44%). Corneal topography was diagnosed in 83.72% of the cases. Through this study, it was found that the results agree with the international publications in reference to age, main symptoms referred and associated ocular and systemic diseases, but, contrary to what was reported, it was evident that this condition is more prevalent among the men in the sample.

Conclusions:

documentation of this disease is important for timely diagnosis and to encourage practices that limit the progression of the disease; it is frequent in young men, allergic conjunctivitis and asthma are associated with it more frequently, blurred vision is referred to in all diagnosed patients, compound myopic astigmatism is associated in greater numbers and with the use of the topographer more patients were diagnosed.

Keywords : keratoconus; compound myopic astigmatism; corneal topography.
