Abstract

GUTIERREZ PEREZ, Elaine Teresa et al. Risk factors determining the prevalence of cardiovascular disease in adults. Acta méd centro [online]. 2020, vol.14, n.4, pp. 446-462.  Epub Dec 31, 2020. ISSN 2709-7927.

Introduction:

the study of cardiovascular disease is of great importance for the establishment of prevention strategies and policies in primary health care.

Objective:

to determine the risk factors that determine the prevalence of cardiovascular disease in adults in Family Doctor’s Office No.16-12 at the "Santa Clara" Polyclinic.

Methods:

observational, analytical and transversal study in adults registered in 2017. Patients were selected by simple random sampling. It was carried out a bivariate analysis through simple and stratified 2x2 contingency tables to look for relationships between risks and cardiovascular disease, prevalence and prevalence reasons; the aetiological fraction of exposed and the population aetiological fraction indicated the impact of the elimination of the risk factor if preventive measures had been established.

Results:

there was a significant relationship between cardiovascular disease and risks except for overweight-obesity. The prevalence of the disease was four times higher in men and older adults, five in hypertensive patients, 2.5 in diabetics, 2.6 in smokers, 3.1 with hypercholesterolemia and 2.6 with hypertriglyceridemia. Being overweight-obese increased the prevalence of some risk factors.

Conclusions:

the stratification exposed the modifying action of the overweight-obese condition, which increased the prevalence of cardiovascular disease in hypertensive patients, older adults or with hypercholesterolemia. The prevalence in exposed and the population morbidity and mortality can decrease with actions of elimination of hypercholesterolemia and hypertriglyceridemia, especially in overweight-obese.

Keywords : risk factors; cardiovascular diseases; prevalence; impact.
