Abstract

Introduction:

epilepsy is a chronic cerebral pathological condition manifested by recurrent seizures that may correspond to focal or generalized involuntary movements.

Objective:

to identify the neuropsychiatric disorders associated with patients with epilepsy in the Municipality of Cifuentes.

Methods:

a descriptive, longitudinal retrospective observational study was conducted on neuropsychiatric disorders in patients with a diagnosis of epilepsy in the Municipality of Cifuentes, Villa Clara Province, in the period from October 2013 to October 2019. The study population consisted of 39 patients and coincides with the study sample.

Results:

58.97% of the patients had pathological simple skull computed axial tomography. The electroencephalogram showed 92.30% pathological; temporal paroxysms, signs of bilateral cortical irritation and signs of cortical distress were predominant. In the Bender's test all patients showed signs of organic pathology (46.15% moderate, 53.84% with depressive symptoms with neurotic functioning, suicidal ideas in 64.10% and 74.35% of patients presented personality disorder).

Conclusions:

neuropsychiatric disorders are associated with epilepsy and there was a predominance of male sex, older adult age group and polytherapy as antiepileptic treatment. The totality of the sample presented psychopathic disorders and a moderate to severe organic disease index was evidenced, anxiety stood out as a state and depression was presented with a predominance of neurotic functioning and moderate dysthymia.
