Abstract

SUAREZ GONZALEZ, Juan Antonio  and  GUTIERREZ MACHADO, Mario. Smoking and cardiometabolic vulnerability in middle-aged women. Acta méd centro [online]. 2023, vol.17, n.4, pp. 753-762.  Epub Dec 31, 2023. ISSN 2709-7927.

Introduction:

smoking is considered the main cause of preventable death.

Objective:

to identify the prevalence of smoking and its relationship with other cardiometabolic risk factors in middle-aged women.

Methods:

retrospective descriptive study at the “Mariana Grajales” Hospital of Santa Clara City in the years 2020 and 2021. A simple random sample of 179 women was selected and a survey instrument was applied.

Results:

52.5% of the total middle-aged women have a smoking habit, most of them with an abdominal circumference and a waist/hip index of risk. The 69.27% have an atherogenic index greater than 4.5 which identifies atherogenic risk.

Conclusions:

smoking is related to other risk factors and increases cardiometabolic vulnerability in these patients.

Keywords : smoking; cardiovascular disease; risk factors; middle age; women.
