The implementation of distance education alternatives to continue the strategy of preparing students for the final academic year of Dentistry in Sancti Spíritus contributed to positive experiences in this COVID-19 pandemic period.

The Dentistry career in the province of Sancti Spíritus reorganized the teaching/educational process by adapting the subject programs to comply with the indications of the Ministry of Higher Education (MES) and Ministry of Public Health (MINSAP) due to the need to suspend the face-to-face activities and implemented distance education in Medical Sciences careers and ensured the social distancing during the COVID-19 pandemic.

The strategy for the preparation of the final academic year in this province was implemented more than 10 years ago and its effectiveness has been proven by obtaining excellent results by the students on the state exam. The staff career considers it an essential tool during the internship, since it consolidates the relevance and quality in the processes of training of professional competences and the development of education in values.

The strategy was designed according to the requirement of curricular strategies for medical science careers to respond to the mission of graduating health professionals with a high degree of professional competencies and with the values required to perform in their job of preserving the health of the population in Cuba and in other parts of the world. 1

In the context of COVID-19, it was necessary to make adjustments to this exceptional situation, since students had to continue under new conditions of non-attendance the preparation for the state exam.

The redesign was based on distance education through the use of Information and Communication Technologies (ICT). It was characterized by having as a fundamental objective the consolidation of the theoretical contents of the year focused on the independence, self-regulation and self-evaluation of the students as active subjects, a precept defended by Cañas Arias. 2

The transition from a face-to-face model to a distance learning model (EaD) requires a series of changes such as: understanding that it is a different format than face-to-face, the intensive use of technology and multiple mechanisms for communication and feedback between students and teachers. 3

The step to distance education, far from being a previously planned solution, has in fact been the only emergency solution to try to guarantee pedagogical continuity and the preparation of students for their state exam, considering that most of the students from this year live in municipalities far from the provincial capital where the strategy is coordinated.

Following is the reorganization of the strategy for the preparation of the terminal year during the COVID-19 pandemic:

First stage

  • Preparation of an examination to diagnose the presence of digital media in the entire enrollment of the fifth year of the dentistry degree by means of an e-mail message to their Infomed and nauta digital addresses.

  • Coordination, after verifying the full existence of logistics, of the date and time to send an integrative exam of 10 questions. (Agreed on Mondays from April 27, 2020 at 2.00 pm). That exam was sent along with his password via e-mail and through the WhatsApp group created with the name "Fifth Dentistry SS", administered by a student of this academic year. They reported taking and self-evaluating the exam in one hour and sending a grade to the email of the main teacher of the year.

Second stage

  • • Feedback and clarification of questions from students with the professor through the use of mobile and landline phones and e-mail. The main mistakes made and the general guidelines for its eradication are discussed collectively through the WhatsApp group.

Once this distance education experience began, the students from the Cienfuegos and Ciego de Ávila provinces joined. The systematic participation in the clarification of doubts, of the main professors of the subjects Surgery (Liuver Ramírez Ramírez, DDP), Orthodontics (Lizandro Michel Pérez García, DDP and PhD) and Periodontology (Ana Iris Gómez Martínez, DDP) should be highlighted.
