Abstract

GRINAN BERGARA, Dianné  and  MUNOZ GUTIERREZ, Teresa. The Field of Labor Studies in Cuba. Actions Taken to Institutionalize It: The Sixties. UH [online]. 2017, n.283, pp. 224-242. ISSN 0253-9276.

This paper examines how the field of labor studies came into being within the Cuban social sciences after 1959. It starts from Pierre Bourdieu's theoretical and methodological principles of fields, and shows special features of the process of institutionalizing the field as a scientific one in the Sixties. It describes the field, taking into account the wide range of subject matters connected with labor and more and more close interrelation between disciplines. Theoretical influences of Marxism-Leninism and dependency theory are underlined. More importance is attached to practice than formulation of theories and emergence of institutions. Finally, it comes to the conclusion that the connection of scientific authority of participants in the field with the structure of the field of power legitimized subject matters.
