Introduction: suicidal behavior is considered the last form of self-harm, consciously, thoughtfully and voluntarily, in a proper state of mental health, or arises as a complication of a mental disorder, usually associated with those ones that are present with depression. Objective: to characterize suicidal behavior in patients with mental disorders from consanguineous families. Methods: a case-control study in 12 health areas in the province was carried out. The universe comprised 2218 patients from consanguineous families in 2012. A control group was formed randomly with 2218 patients from consanguineous families. Results: predominant suicidal behavior in patients with mental retardation from consanguineous families was of 8.8% with 196 cases found, followed by patients with bipolar disorder (3.6%) and those affected with schizophrenia which included three patients (2%). Calculation was performed for adjusted rate of suicide in the province considering a population of 1981 type, and the results showed 11.7%, which was below the  suicide rate of 2012 (15.4%). It showed the lethal effects of the diseases associated with depression in the elderly. Conclusions: patients with mental disorders with depression showed higher prevalence of suicidal behavior. In patients descended from consanguineous families with mental disorders, suicidal behavior was significantly higher than in the control group. Suicide attempts were more frequent than suicide as such.
