Abstract

CONCEPCION TOLEDO, Diana N. et al. Promotion of the gradual development of sugar factories as biorefineries through postgraduate activities. Universidad y Sociedad [online]. 2022, vol.14, n.4, pp. 217-224.  Epub Aug 30, 2022. ISSN 2218-3620.

Increasing the manufacture of chemical products and energy from renewable sources is a necessity for the development of Cuba. However, faced with this challenge, there was the problem of not having a strategy to promote the joint participation of teachers, researchers and professionals from the industrial sector. The objective of this work is to present the experience of a system of postgraduate activities aimed at the gradual development of sugar factories in the concept of biorefineries. The strategy employed is based on the execution of specific projects through the university-company link, with the participation of the agents involved to satisfy the demand to increase the obtaining of products and energies from renewable sources, impacting on local development. The results are evidenced in the execution of 29 projects, which prompted 8 doctoral theses in Technical Sciences and 19 master's theses, authorship mostly by business professionals, advised by 5 universities. It is concluded that the gradual development of sugar factories such as biorefineries allows scientific research that advances more quickly through relevant postgraduate activities, experiences that should be extended to other sectors.
