The film Una pelea cubana contra los demonios by Tomás Gutiérrez Alea, based on the book by Fernando Ortiz Historia de una pelea cubana contra los demonios, proposes to think on memory as a foundational space for discursive practices on Cuban identity. It dialogues with the cultural policies of the time in which it materializes, and postulates fragmentation as the basis of a historical evolution that tries to manage, not without conflict, the axes of the nation. The film and Ortiz's text illuminate each other, making their dialogue a zone of entangled cultural discourses. Alea identifies, together with Ortiz, a national identity embodied in free-spiritedness and rebellion, substances previous to the beginning of the wars of independence in 1868, gestated in the very process of colonization.
