Abstract

HIDALGO GONZALEZ, Rosalina; HIDALGO GONZALEZ, María Caridad; GARCIA DIAZ, Estrella  and  MADRAZO GUTIERREZ, Niurka. El desarrollo profesional en enfermería. Rev Cubana Enfermer [online]. 2002, vol.18, n.1, pp.8-14. ISSN 0864-0319.

The Cuban nursing profession welcomes the 21st century with a qualitative improvement; this is a challenge for nurses as individuals and for the nursing staff as a whole. A retrospective study was made on the professional development of the nursing staff in "Luis A. Turcios Lima" teaching polyclinics with the objective of assessing the application and fulfillment of the Methodological Regulation Document regarding professional competency and performance and of the Ministerial Resolution No. 63 of April 28, 1997 on the regulation of the granting of academic credits in the National Health Care System. Twenty-two out of 26 Bachelors of Nursing were taken as a sample during the second semester of the year 1999 to apply a survey with the following variables: year of graduation, number of academic credits, ways of acquiring such credits, channels for improving their professional level established by their work centers and participation in the graduate education. Once tabulated by the downstroke method (método de palotes), data were transferred to statistical tables for a better understanding. It was concluded that most of the surveyed nurses had less than 5 years of experience as graduated nurses; however, satisfactory results had been achieved in the field of training and most of the academic credits were attained in the presentation of paper in scientific events and postgraduate courses. The participation and presentation of scientific papers in the annual scientific events of their work centers were remarkable.
