Abstract

VALDES MARRERO, Cristobalina; MACHADO MARQUETTI, María Luisa  and  ENRIQUEZ BORGES, Hilda. Enseñanza por problemas como medio de elevar el desempeño y la competencia profesional. Rev Cubana Enfermer [online]. 2002, vol.18, n.2, pp. 103-106. ISSN 1561-2961.

The making of professional profiles is an essential requisite for the preparation of curricula. At present, it is centered on activities directed to develop professional competence and performance in the trainee according to the scientific and technical advances and with social repercussion and identification of the professional’s own values. By solving problems, didactic materials stimulating the active learning may be provided in order to analyze the programs of basic sciences in Nursing to know to what extent they are related to the solution of health problems and to identify the application of active teaching methods by problems. A descriptive and cross-sectional study was conducted to this end with a sample of 50 professors and 2 variables were studied: application of the solution of health problems in the curricula and the utilization of active teaching methods in the solution of health problems. A survey with close questions for new and experienced professors was done aimed at evaluating the characteristics of the curricula at "Dr. Salvador Allende" Faculty of Medical Sciences. Questions were asked about the curricula at different levels and positive answers were obtained regarding the performance and competence of professors. 95 % of those who were surveyed did not know about the nursing education by problems. It was found that the present curricula do not contribute to acquire professional competence and that they do not have the necessary requirements for teaching in this century, since the use of active teaching methods and techniques is not clear enough.
