A cross-sectional descriptive study was conducted aimed at characterizing those home accidents that occurred among children under 10 during the 90 days previous to the interview (between December, 1996, and March, 1997). A sample of 1 156 children was selected in a sampling by single-stage conglomerates. The family physician offices were considered as conglomerates. Data were collected in questionnaries made to this end. Measures of relative frequency (percentages and ratios) were calculated. The magnitude of association was estimated in the associated variables through the odds ratio and its confidence interval with a reliability of 95.0 %. The incidence of children having accidents was 23.6 % (21.2-26.1). The factors most associated with accidents proved to be being between 1 and 4 years old and having other accidents.
