Abstract

HERNANDEZ VALDES, Armando O.. José Martí Airport and the risks associated to its flood mitigation system. Ing. hidrául. ambient. [online]. 2022, vol.43, n.2, pp.71-83.  Epub May 20, 2022. ISSN 1680-0338.

José Martí International Airport is represented into a mathematical model of Vento aquifer. From the results of a calibration model of a section of Vento aquifer where José Martí International Airport is located, two scenarios have been simulated as to understand the aquifer response to extreme weather events with similar characteristics to hurricane Frederick. Results show how recharge wells are transformed into surging wells and the descending period of the groundwater level is prolonged to about 10 days. The findings point out the vulnerability of the current flood mitigation system and the pollution risks associated with it. Therefore, it is recommendable to substitute the current system by a superficial one.

Keywords : pollution; hydrogeology; floods; mathematical modeling; risks; vulnerability.
