Abstract
ARNER REYES, Erly; VAZ SUAREZ, Coralina and ROCA FERNANDEZ, Estrella. Two Different Responses Following Natural Disasters that Affected the Built Heritage of Santiago de Cuba. au [online]. 2015, vol.36, n.2, pp. 63-76. ISSN 1815-5898.
This article discusses the different visions embodied in two post-natural-disaster reconstruction processes, under different historical and political circumstances. It offers a comparative study of the impact and recovery processes following the two most significant natural disasters suffered by the city of Santiago de Cuba: the earthquake of 1932 and the hurricane Sandy of 2012. It analyses the data and registers compiled in both cases, and presents a synthesis of the particularities of the dwellings which collapsed, in terms of construction techniques. This discussion sheds light on the relative successes and failures in each of the two historical moments. It concludes that, under current conditions, the challenge presented consists in understanding the social achievements. Furthermore, this particular focus permits a consideration of the city’s heritage values.
