Abstract

RODRIGUEZ-GONZALEZ, Diana Rosa; FERNANDEZ CASTILLO, Evelyn  and  ROQUE DOVAL, Yamila. Environmental identity and pro - environmental behaviors among the Cuban University Students. Conrado [online]. 2022, vol.18, n.88, pp. 84-92.  Epub Oct 30, 2022. ISSN 1990-8644.

The environmental identity describes an auto-concept which incorporates and is defined by its relationship with nature. Studying the environmental identity is important since it may affect people’s pro-environmental behaviors. This research was aimed at, first, exploring the psychometric properties of the Environmental Identity Scale and the Pro-environmental Behavior Scale in the Cuban university students and, second, investigating their connection. In the correlational study with a non-experimental transversal ex - post - facto design, 844 Cuban university students participated. The study was conducted from January to March 2020. A Factorial Analysis of Main Components of Categorical Variables, a Factorial Confirmatory and Reliability Analysis were carried out. The descriptive statistics and correlation analysis were used. As expected, a unifactorial structure of both instruments was kept and the confirmatory models confirmed a good adjustment. A direct and strong correlation was clearly seen between the environmental identity and the ecological behavior. The strong and direct correlation between the environmental identity and the ecological behavior upholds the suggestion of the environmental identity as a construct for the configuration of the environmental field as seen from Psychology and for the promotion of pro-environmental behavior.
