Abstract

GONZALEZ-ROCHE, Yaribey Mayusca; PEREZ-VILLAR, Maira María; MARTINEZ-NODAL, Pastora de la C.  and  PEDROZO-ALFONSO, Julio César. Subsurface wetland performance in the purification of oily waters. Kinetics of DQO removal. Rev Cub Quim [online]. 2019, vol.31, n.3, pp. 452-462. ISSN 2224-5421.

In the present research, the removal of organic matter and fats, oils and hydrocarbons in the oil wastewater effluent of plant for generating electric power “Santa Clara Industrial Los Alevines” was evaluated by means of an experimental subsurface wetland. The first step was to characterize the effluent wastewater from the primary treatment, currently installed in the entity, proving that they do not conform with the Cuban Dumping Standard NC: 27/2012. The experimental system was assembled consisting of a column filled with sugarcane bagasse, previously evaluated, as secondary treatment and the subsurface wetland as tertiary treatment, obtaining a removal efficiency in the wetland of 68 % for COD and over 35 % for fats, oils and hydrocarbons. A kinetic study of the removal of COD in the experimental wetland was also carried out, obtaining a better adjustment of the experimental data to the first-order kinetic model with a kinetic constant of 2,002 d-1.

Keywords : subsurface wetlands; oily waters; Cyperus Alternifolius.
