Objective:

To present the design of a comprehensive index for the monitoring and evaluating the financial sustainability of protected areas, based on the three- dimensional approach to sustainable development.

Methods:

Historical-logical, analysis-synthesis, systemic and documentary review, in addition, the application of expert surveys, the used software of MATLAB R 2013, the UCINET V. 6.0 and the Saaty’s Hierarchies.

Main results:

The formation of the monitoring team, the identification and construction of 16 relevant indicators according to the established dimensions: economic, social and environmental, for the collection, recording of information and its study, feedback and necessary adjustments.

Conclusions:

The design of the integral index and its development in the Alejandro de Humboldt National Park, Guantánamo province, enabled its validation and contribution to the solution of the theoretical and methodological shortcomings highlighted in the different studies analyzed at the international level an in Cuba.
